Malia is a costal town located 34 kiometers east of Heraklion, the Cretan capital, with a population of 6000 people. The town is a touristic attraction primarly for its amazing beaches, the archeological sites and the nightlife. Moreover, the central position of the town in the island enables the visitor to use Malia as a base and explore Crete.
Malia has one of the longest sandy beaches in Crete, starting from the small town Stalis in the west and extends for more than four kilometers to the east reaching the anchient minoan palace. The main beach is located in front of the town, only 400 meters from the Blue Sky Apts and hosts a variety of beach bars. To the east of the town, there is the very well organized "Potamos" beach, as well.
Apart from the modern and touristic side, Malia offers the traditional Cretan element to the visitors. By exploring the streets and passages of the old village you will descover old Byzantine churches, squares and traditional restaurants.
Eastward of the town, is located the third larger Minoan palace in Crete, the Minoan Palace of Malia first build in 1900BC. It is located near the see, besides the "Potamos" beach and according to the history is the palace of Sarpidon the brother of the legentary Minos. The Minoan town covers an area of more than 7500sq meters and consists of the palace, houses, streets and tombs. During summer the visiting hours are 8:00-19:30 (Daily).
